Burundi government recognises opposition leader
Burundi's government has recognised the new head of the main opposition party after the former leader, an ex-rebel chief, was deposed by dissident party cadres, a letter released Thursday showed. Agathon Rwasa, seen as President Pierre Nkurunziza's main rival in June elections until he led an opposition boycott of the vote, was replaced Sunday in an extraordinary congress of the National Liberation Forces (FNL). |

Lessons learned from community infrastructure construction and/or rehabilitation projects In the context of the implementation of the Priority Plan for Peacebuilding, developed by the Government of Burundi with the support of the United Nations and in collaboration with other partners, a funding package of 35 million American dollars was allocated to the Government of Burundi by the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) to finance 18 projects in four priority domains, which are: (i) peace and democratic governance, (ii) reform of the security sector, (iii) justice and Human Rights and (iv) the land issue and community recovery. |

Away day on media ethics
The Observatoire de la Presse Burundaise and BINUB jointly organised an away day on "key media ethics issues during elections". In his opening speech, ERSG Charles Petrie indicated that Burundian media has played a laudable role during the electoral process so far. Mr. Petrie stated that the media synergy contributed to democracy by making information easily available and helping CENI correct some noted electoral irregularities. Ms. Vestine Nahimana, President of the National Communication Council (CNC) and Mr. Sylvester Ntibantunganya former President and journalist, now Senator, both equally commended the media’s performance and called for solidarity among media outlets. |
